PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Two employees who were shot inside the pharmacy of a Walgreens in Port Orange are now recovering, police announced Thursday morning.
Port Orange police said the shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after a man entered the store on Taylor Road.
Investigators have identified Daniel Asseff, 60, as the gunman who shot the employees.
Police said after opening fire inside the store, Asseff left the business and then got into his car in the Walgreens parking lot. the police department said as officers approached his vehicle, Asseff fatally shot himself while sitting in the driver’s seat.
Investigators said in an agency news release Thursday that it appears Asseff was a “disgruntled customer,” but they did not elaborate.
Police said the suspect’s gunfire resulted in one employee being shot in the torso and said that victim remained hospitalized Thursday in serious condition.
The other employee, who suffered a gunshot wound to the foot, has been released from the hospital, according to POPD.
Walgreens shared a statement Wednesday night with Channel 9.
It read, “Our hearts are with our two Walgreens team members who were victims of a senseless act of violence. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation and remain committed to supporting our team through counseling and other available services. The safety of our patients, customers and team members is our highest priority.”
Detectives have also released updated information about store customers at the time of the shooting.
Initially, they reported that a single customer might have been inside Walgreens. But investigators now believe there were several customers in the store and in the parking lot area when the shooting happened. None were hurt, they said.
police said the names of the injured employees will be kept confidential for now, as detectives continue to investigate what led up to the shooting.
The store remained closed Thursday morning and it was not clear when it might reopen.
