Lawsuit filed against Spectrum News 13 parent company after fatal shooting of journalist in 2023

ORLANDO, Fla. — A lawsuit has been filed in regard to the 2023 deadly shooting of Spectrum News 13 journalist Dylan Lyons.

NeJame Law said it filed the lawsuit against Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum News 13, in relation to Lyons’ murder.

A news release issued by the law firm on Tuesday stated, in part, “The lawsuit highlights and alleges systemic failures within Charter Communications, outlining and alleging a broad pattern of conscious disregard for the lives of journalists, such as Dylan Lyons.”

The release further stated, “This groundbreaking lawsuit alleges that through indifference, recklessness, or gross negligence, Charter Communications’ actions contributed to the death of Dylan Lyons.

Lyons, 24, and T’Yonna Major, 9, both died on Feb. 22, 2023, after Orange County deputies said they were shot by the same man — 19-year-old Keith Moses.

Deputies said the News 13 reporter and the third grader were shot within minutes of each other in the Pine Hills community; they were two of five people Moses is accused of shooting over a five hour span.

Lyons was on assignment reporting on a shooting that happened earlier that day. Major was inside her nearby home with her mother, who investigators said was also shot by Moses.

NeJame Law said a lawsuit against Orange County Sheriff’s Office “alleging civil rights violations and wrongful death” is also forthcoming.

The law firm said it will hold a press conference in regard to the lawsuit against Charter Communications on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
