A study involving 4,666 South Korean adults found that men consuming 1–2 servings of baechu kimchi daily had a 39% lower risk of high total cholesterol, while women showed a 20% lower risk of low HDL cholesterol with similar intake.
The study suggests that kimchi’s unique composition may contribute to these effects, although it does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship.
While the findings are specific to older Korean adults, incorporating ¼–1 cup of kimchi into meals could be beneficial for cholesterol management.
However, individuals should be mindful of kimchi’s sodium content, especially if monitoring blood pressure.
