A Florida businessman and prominent political donor is the owner of a Cessna passenger aircraft that flew into restricted U.S. airspace over Washington, D.C., Sunday before crashing into the Virginia wilderness.
The pilot reportedly lost consciousness, prompting an aerial chase with Pentagon jets.
No survivors were located at the crash scene.
John Rumpel confirmed he was the owner and said his “entire family” was on the plane at the time.
Reports indicate the victims include his daughter, a grandchild and her nanny.
He told reporters, “We know nothing about the crash. We are talking to the FAA now. I’ve got to keep the line clear.”
It is the second tragedy in the Rumpel family.
In 1994, another one of Rumpel’s daughters died in a scuba diving accident when she was just 19.
